Indira Gandhi International Airport
  Location:
New Delhi, India
Description:
Terminal 3, Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, India

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is arguably the most challenging and high profile public sector project in India today. This project, for the GMR-Fraport consortium, included the major development of a runway / taxiway system, aprons, new terminals, access roads, an integrated transportation system and other ancillary facilities. Completed in time for the 2010 Commonwealth games held in Delhi, the new Terminal building has a built up area of 502,000m2 and is now the seventh largest terminal in the world with an ability to serve 34 million passengers per annum. But most importantly, the project was a success in its broader mission, to provide an iconic and world class “gateway” to modern India, reflective of her growing strength as a global economy.

As part of the Mott McDonald led team, we have carried out the landside planning, structural design and cost estimates for the entire project, which is designed to serve 100 million passengers per annum at the full development stage. The key challenges in the project included managing independent accesses for the future terminals (T3 to T6) around a central spine road arrangement, design of dispersal system to handle the ultimate demand, integration of various functions and services (including parking, metro, taxis, buses etc.), handling of the structural issues of a huge terminal which has approximately 300mx300m footprint and with long finger piers of almost 700m). The building was designed with an efficient column arrangement for maximum space availability in the halls and the roof was provided with a folding roof design to drain rainwater without exposing the gutters, but at the same time provide maximum lighting to the interior in line with the requirements of HOK, who where the architects of the building.

In recognition of the project’s ambition, complexity and successful delivery, it has won the prestigious British Construction Industry Award (BCIA), for the Best International Project in 2010, and commended by the British Expertise, for Major Consultancy Project of the Year in 2009.
